Dinner at Dusk

I'm a little behind, but I wanted to put up some pictures from my dinner party I had a few weeks ago. When I was growing up, I would imagine all sorts of things. I could play by myself for hours and people would see me out in the yard running around and talking to myself. What they couldn't see was the whole world that I had created. I never had "an imaginary friend", I had an imaginary friendly grocer from the imaginary grocery store down the imaginary street. Imaginary rangers at the imaginary wildlife reservation. A fully staffed imaginary hospital for any imaginary emergencies, and so forth. And on occasion I would throw an imaginary dinner party for my imaginary neighbors and business associates. All growing up, I thought dinner parties were something adults had. I couldn't wait until I was old enough to have them. A little while ago the thought hit me, why couldn't I have a dinner party? Because of the time I spent imagining as a child, it didn't take long to figure out how I wanted everything to look, but it did take plenty of time making the decorations to make my imagination come to life.

These are the boxes I made as favors for them to take home. When you take the lid off, the box folds out into a card. I wrote "Dinner at Dusk 2010. Treasure the Memories" in the card and added a few chocolate Treasure candies. I tried to stick to a color theme of these five bright, bold colors.

These are the invitations I gave people. This was a legitimate dinner and a facebook invite just wouldn't cut it.

Olivia helped me punch out all those little squares and arrange them so they looked nice.

When I was younger, before I really knew how much I liked making things, I would watch this craft show for kids. They made these candle holders once by gluing tissue paper onto an old jar. I always wanted to try it, but we never seemed to get around to it. I knew this was what I wanted as the center piece at the party and I figured I was old enough to do it. I decided baby food jars were just the right size and that twenty-four of them would be perfect. Not counting the time it took to cut out all the tissue paper squares, these little jars soon lost their appeal. As a kid, I never would have guessed that it would take so much time to glue each piece where you wanted it. But I still liked the way they looked so I pushed on.

After weeks of planning, gluing, painting, cutting, fraying, and sewing, it was finally time to set it all up. The family helped me figure out how to set up the white shade thing, which we somehow had no instructions for, and get the tables in place. It was time to make this dream a reality.

I think I was trying to be artistic with the camera...or I accidentally took a picture when I set it down.

Each guest had a rock with their name stamped on it. Ben was over an hour late so this is the only picture I took with him "in it." Mom helped me make those fun napkins. The frayed edge was perfect, but it sure took a lot of time and patience. Mom also helped me make the fun table cloth that tied in with my color scheme.

Mom and my friend, Mary, helped make the food, because what's a dinner party without a real dinner? We even had vegetables and fruit. In college that can be pretty rare.

When it was time, we lit the little candles and turned on the twinkle lights. Everything glowed just how I had pictured it. It was magical.

This lantern wasn't exactly how I had envisioned, but I kind of liked the way the butterflies looked as it got dark outside.

Most of the group was on time, which can be rare with this crowd. We enjoyed ourselves in the cool evening, talking and laughing, as we waited for the last few to arrive.

I bought that goblet from D. I. with James in mind. I think he liked it.

Everyone enjoyed the food and were happy to go back for seconds.

The dessert turned out quite well. It was a delicious cheesecake/white chocolate filling in a small graham cracker crust. Almost everyone saved the raspberry for last.

Like Ben, this is the only picture with "me in it." Hannah reprimanded me later for that, but I was having too much fun and just forgot to get enough pictures.

Another artistic shot, but I meant to do this one. I liked the way the lanterns turned out even if they made me want to rip my hair out while I was making them.

When it was time to leave everyone helped me take down the decorations. Some how Mary got stuck with my butterfly nets. James thought she looked like a statue so he took a picture of her all wrapped up.

When I was originally inviting people one of my friends couldn't come. He was going to be an efy counselor that week and was really sad he couldn't make it. His roommate did come and convinced me to have a "dinner party one and a half" so that Carter could come and see it. It ended up being much smaller and much shorter, but it was still fun.

We decided to swing, but Eric got stuck with the baby seat.

Here is a sneak peak at the napkins for my next, and possibly last, dinner party... at least for a while. This time it's an elegant black and white theme.

I haven't figured out all the details yet, but it should be interesting.

Fun at the Zoo

These are the invitations I made for our zoo adventure. I wanted to get a group together from my ward. The green one is supposed to be reptile skin, and the gray one is elephant skin. The tiger stripes definitely took the longest. Despite my hard work on the invites, only one other person could come. So Craig and I head for the zoo.

Classic zoo pic

I was surprised how much I loved the elephants.

The baby is so adorable. She was having a blast splashing in the mud puddle.

Bruce

It must be hard to be a turtle. He has to carry the weight of his world on his back. He was tired, and it was only ten in the morning.

I love giraffes. They were so beautiful, but they wouldn't go inside so I could see them closer. Maybe someday.

The tigers were stunning. I didn't even realize he was there at first. I think this is one of the cubs. They just turned one.

I keep losing the animal in this picture. Can you find it?

He was posing for all the cameras.

But sometimes you you just need to scratch that itch.

We tried to feed the ducks, but they must have been full.

Look what was waiting for me after a long day at the zoo.

Happy Easter/General Conference Weekend

This looked like a fun Easter treat to try. It is peepshi (Peeps + Sushi). I love peeps. As gross as they are, there is something fun about them. So tonight we made some while the boys were at the Priesthood session. It was sticky and icky, but it gave Olivia, Mom, and me a chance to talk about what we had gotten out of conference so far. It was a good talk. After the boys came home we tried our colorful array of peepshi. It's extremely sweet and could put you straight into a sugar coma, but it was fun to try.

Happy Birthday Buster

My puppy is one year old. He has gotten so big since I first fell in love with him. Every day I'm surprised at the new things he can reach and do. His personality is so strong. I'm sad that most of you don't see him as his most cuddly and playful self. He is really sweet and loving, and I know he's always there for me.

This is baby Buster trying to steal the towel from me after his second bath. He doesn't like the actual bath very much, but he absolutely hates being dried off.

He was only a few months old here. His eyes look a little freaky and he looks so small.
Did you know that puppies lose their teeth? Most of the time they lose them in the grass or swallow them, but occasionally you find them on the floor. The tooth fairy left him a nice treat under his pillow.
We wore matching blue sweaters for Christmas.
He was trying to give me a kiss. And yes, he's wearing a diaper.
Just us. Hangin' out. Doin' our thing.
Wearing his new sweet birthday shirt. Look at how nicely he's sitting while I take the picture.
This is his birthday "cake". Peanut butter topped with a cheddar treat. Yum.

Embarrassing Baby Pictures...of Buster

As you all know, Buster has been having some health problems. It broke my heart that there was something wrong with him and I couldn't do anything to help him. They originally thought that he had a small vein that was bypassing his liver and causing toxins to be pumped back into his blood stream. However, he wasn't showing any signs of being sick other then what they found in his numerous blood tests. So all we could do was wait and watch. Yesterday I took him in for another blood test before his surgery. It was a relief when the doctor called and said that his blood test came back completely normal and that he was in perfect health. They performed the surgery and said he would be feeling better in a day or so.
Unfortunately, the struggle started right when we got home. For the next several days I have to keep him from licking, biting, or scratching his stitches. Our first attempt was an E-Collar, otherwise known as "the cone of shame." I had high hopes for this, but it failed miserably. He still manages to twist and turn his way to his wound. Now all it is good for is to make it easier to block his efforts. Now Buster has to always be with someone. He gets pretty frustrated. He's been on his leash for most of the day so he can't get too far. This is how Buster spent some time as we were waiting for bedtime. He may look like he was struggling, but he was actually very relaxed.

Finally, it was bedtime. With the help of three other people we managed to wrap him in a little diaper, hoping it would keep him from licking through out the night. He will be pretty embarrassed by these pictures when he grows up. But for now I just want him to get better soon.

Woo-Hoo

Andy finally said my name. After months of coaching he said "Ya-ya" right before everyone left after second Sunday family dinner. Even though he only said it to get me to leave him alone, he still said it. I've made it into the club.

It's Monday

I just wanted to share some of the fun that I had on Mondays last month. From left to right, or should I say "weft to wight":Elder Ward, Elder Johnson?, Elder ?, and Elder Bird. This is part of District 43-C. Elder Atkinson and Elder Anderson had left for their mission that morning. These elders were a hoot to work with and they made it almost fun to clean the bathrooms at 6:30 in the morning. They even wrote me a song.
Here is a video of Elder Bird and Elder Ward doing a kick-flip, janitor style.

And yes, I did forget to turn off the camera when I was done.

So this morning I was a little sad because this was the first Monday that the "Bathroom Elders" wouldn't be there. I had finished cleaning in the lobby and was in the closet checking the list, finding out that they had only giving us 2 elders to replace the 8 that had left, when I heard a male voice yell "Gretchen!" I was confused. I didn't think that there were any elders left in the MTC who knew me. I walked out to see an elder that I had never seen before standing in the doorway. I asked what I could do for him. He said that he had seen pictures of me and wanted to meet me. I was very confused at this point, and even a little bit worried. He stuck out his hand and introduced himself as Elder Thomas or Thompson, I sadly can't remember his name, and told me that he was a friend of Elder Bird who had asked Elder T to find me before he left and say goodbye one more time for District C. I couldn't believe it.

Here is the song. It's very cheesy, but we do work with pretty strong chemicals.
To the tune of "Ye Elders of Israel"

1. Ye elders of District C, come join now with me!
In cleaning the bathrooms at the MTC!
We'll put on our goggles

And grab rubber gloves.
We'll snag all the sponges and
Scrub, scrub, scrub, scrub!

2. Oh Sister Young, oh Sister Young,
We bid thee farewell.
We're going on our missions
In God we will dwell!
We'll scrub so hard
'Til all look divine,
Then they will be ready
For all to refine.

3. Now verse 1 again!
4. Musical Interlude!
5. Verse 2 again!
